Pictures and artwork from Othello productions

I hope you enjoy these pictures I've found from various productions of Othello. What's so great about Shakespeare is how each producion is so unique. I've seen Othello a couple of times on stage and three different times on film. One stage version was terrible, but the other was fantastic. Of the three film versions I've seen each had its good and bad parts. Usually you might get a great Othello and a bad Iago, or vice versa. When you get a good Othello, Iago and Desdemona, you're quite lucky. Some times the minor characters can make a show. I remember the Roderigo and Emilia in the Othello I saw in London really giving great performances. The worst Othello I've seen was in a film version with Anthony Hopkins painted brown as Othello. I just didn't buy it. Anyway, enjoy these pictures.

The one below is a shot from the production I saw in London in 2004. It was set in a fascist kind of state in the 1940s.

THe shot below is a famous production starring Patrick Stewart. Othello, in this case, is white, and everyone else is black.

The one below is from a very famous production from the early 1960's starring Lawrence Olivier. This picture shows you how Othello was performed for many years with a white actor made up to look black.

Wow! These pictures really help when trying to make a mental image of Othello and the other main characters. And they're all so different from each-other-- It gives us a chance to choose which set of actors and actresses we like the best.

I like being able to see the actors for myself, it puts more of a picture into my mind when I read the book. But, I also like the choice on what Othello looks like so then I have more imagination as to what I think it is.

these are great pictures. it's interesting to see the white actors who were made up to look black and that there was a play where everyone was black and othello was white.

Wow. These pictures really show that the plays can be performed in different ways. The actors themselves and the cloths they wear really differ from each other.

YoYo Mr. Wilson!

The pictures of the varying Othello productions were interesting. After envisioning it in my head it was nice to see how professionals interpreted the text. I think it is very interesting how in some of the Othello productions Othello is portrayed as a white man in a world of black people.

I like the old drawings and paintings. It feels like an insight to how it was really portrayed in the days of shakespeare.

Absolutely incredible pics. I think we should all dress up like Othello (for the boys) or Desdemona (for the girls) one day at school. Mr. Wilson can wear his South African shirt thingy.

Many people have different ideas about Shakespeare's works. I like the twist with Othello being white and everyone else black.

I think that the twist with Othello being white is kind of dumb. To me, the racial differences (in those times) aren't as extreme with whites as they are with blacks. It changes it too much.

I think it is funny that they painted someone black to play the role of Othello when the actor is actually white. it also seems strange to twist the story around and have Othello white and everyone else black. I am enjoying the book in class and hope to learn more about it.

I think its so intresting how many different ways othello and many shakespeare plays are percieved. I think its very artistic how the othello played by Patrick Stewart was white and everyone else is white. In a way, i could fathom more (when othello was played as a white man) how out of place i would feel if i was the only white homedawg in a dark skinned city.

Hey Mr.Wilson!

Thanks so much for all of the pictures! I love how all of the characters vary in each of the plays. Whether Desdemona has black, curly, blonde, thin, or brown hair or if Othello is either black or white (or white painted balck for that matter) they all portray the character in an amazing way! Thanks again! They help a lot.
