London Bridge

This is the picture I mentioned in class. If you were a traitor or some other scoundrel in Shakepeare's time, you could get your head chopped off and mounted on a stick on London bridge. Sounds very Lord of the Flies to me. See if you can spot the heads in the picture. Click on the picture to enlarge it.

I think I see the heads. They're the roundish things on sticks on top of the building right? I think I'd rather be hung.

They had harsh punishment back then

The heads are on top of one of those buildings. That does sound like Lord of the Flies.

The only heads I saw were on top of the buildings, I remember you talking in class about how the rich people and the poor people had different punishments.

How very barbaric and disturbing to mount peoples heads on a bridge. It's interesting to see what was done in history though.

Ouch. On the gate near the front is where the heads are.

Yikes. Some of them look like they're about to fall over. That would be a nasty surprise for anyone walking below.

I think its ironic how we always associate the phrase head hunters with a Hollywood image of barbarians deep in the jungle somewhere. Interesting to know that the same thing was done over in "civilized" England as well.

I see the on the archway.

My family and I actually went to the Tower of London when I was in 4th grade. Pretty disturbing but interesting punishments.

That is so barbaric. Its like a game; instead of where's Waldo, it's where's the heads!

That would be really graphic to see just walking along on a normal day! I wouldn't be able to handle it. But it most likely works!

i think it was actually a good idea for parliament to put the heads of traitors and criminals on the brides. because most likely everybody would see them and would definitely wouldn't commit treason or anything because of the punishment. I just went to London this summer and it is funny because London Bridge is just about the same as any bridge that you would see on the Thames, but seems to be the most famous. This picture must have taken place before one of the big fires.

If I walked into the London, and the first things to greet me were those heads on a stick, I would definity keep myself in line.

Um, that's disturbing. It was probably shameful for the deceased person's family as well. I don't think my parents would be too excited if my head was stuck on top of London Bridge for all to see.

Wow! That is not something I would want to see everyday! I see them though, and I am glad I just see them in the picture.

Hey Mr. Wilson...

Whoa...I suppose that's one way to send the message. I mean if walking into London I saw a bunch of bloody human heads each on a stick for public eye i wouldn't want to be in their shoes. However, did people just know that if one was beheaded it was because they were some sort of traitor. It could be a good way to prevent people from behaving as scoundrels if they know beheading is the punishment for it. If i was just a visitor and was unaware of the culture it would just appear as an act of savagery. This photograph does seem to relate to Lord of the Flies, but whatever it is it is beyond sick. Who thinks up these punishments? I know one thing, if I entered a town where I witnessed the posting of detached heads I'd get out of there faster than racehorse out of the gates!

Hey Mr. Wilson!

Ew, I see them... quite a gross way to get the point across to the people living in London. The buildings on the bridge are interesting, did people live there? I can't imagine waking up and seeing bloody heads outside of my window =/ Hope you had a good Thanksgiving!
